Food Roundup (Week 7)

A mediocre week of food... lol

1.  Yoshinoya Delivery

So far Yoshinoya has the worst delivery system that I've experienced.  The delivery number isn't on their website, there's no option for English (press 2) when I dial in like the other places, they told me they needed 75 mins for my food to come - crazy!  The food was also meh, but the way they packaged it was so cool!

I got the regular beef bowl set which came with soup, upgrade to soft drink for $2.  The food is packaged in two compartments, the beef at the top and rice at the bottom.  Took a while to figure out how to split them but you just put your thumb in the groove in the corner and pull it out.  Pretty clever... lol

2.  Crepes at Marion Crepes (Causeway Bay)

From the sign I'm assuming this chain originated from Japan, and I'm pretty sure I saw this chain 5 years ago when I went to Japan :P  All I remember is seeing it everywhere and not trying it, so sad!  Finally get to try it 5 years later... hehe.  I had the vanilla ice cream crepe with chocolate sauce and banana. After ordering in broken Chinese we watched them make it...

OMG, it was so so good when the crepe was still hot~! So delicious...

I finally saw my beloved sesame ice cream there so I'm hoping to go there again to try it out!  There are a couple stores in Hong Kong, find them on their site here.

Food Roundup (Week 6)

Ate so much GOOD FOOD last week!!

1.  Dinner @ some random "open-air food stall" (dai pai dong)
Dai Pai Dong's are quite common in Hong Kong.  They're literally stalls, sometimes lined in rows down a street/alleyway and you just sit on the street, order and eat.  The one we went to is somewhere in Central (near Lan Kwai Fong), can't remember the exact street though).

We had a group of 8 and they didn't have enough tables out (yet), so they pulled out two folding tables and 8 chairs out of nowhere and set them up in seconds.  After we sat down for a few mins, I looked around and there were at least 4 more tables set up with people sitting there already!  I was surprised to see people in suits eating here.  Must mean that it's good? :P

Everything was sticky/dirty:  The tables were sticky, all the utensils were sticky and even the menu was sticky. HAHA.  Just means that you MUST wash all your stuff with tea.  We were even sitting beside the drainage/sewer, which is kinda convenient when we dispose of the dirty tea.  Ordered some really good stuff, the BEST sweet & sour pork (ribs) and eggplant I have EVER eaten. Getting hungry thinking about it.

The normal sweet and sour pork you get in Canada is tomato-style sour, but this one was more lemon-y.  The taste was just perfect.  The eggplant and peppers were stuffed with fish paste (made me think of you, Jorge!!) and I have seriously never had such beautifully cooked eggplant. I thought I loved eggplant before, but now I REALLY love eggplant.  I don't think I can eat eggplant anymore when I go home...

2.  Egg Tarts @ Tai Cheong Bakery (Central)

These are the best egg tarts I've had in my life (so far).  The pastry was so wonderfully flaky and the egg part was sooo smooth!  They also have egg white egg tarts, but my friend said it wasn't as good as the regular one.  It was $5 per tart, quite pricy but SO WORTH IT!  My friend had a mini chicken pot pie and it looked SO GOOD, gonna try it next time :)

3. Snow White Sago @ Honeymoon Dessert (chain restaurant)

This was recommended by my foodie friend Jen (ha ha) and of course it was AWESOME!  It was so interesting to eat - there were lots of weird fruits I've never had before, like dried longan and other misc fruits (lol) but it tasted so good with the ice creamy, ice flakey, sago "soup base".  I've also heard that this place is famous for its Mango Sago with Pomelo (right pic) so I'll definitely try that one next time :)

4.  3AM Dim Sum @ Sun Hing (Kennedy Town)

Was SO awesome, see my blog post about it here.  I'm getting sooo hungry just looking at this picture...

5.  Black Pepper Beef Rice @ Pepper Lunch (Langham Place, Mong Kok)

Apparently according to Wikipedia, Pepper Lunch is a "fast-steak" chain from Japan.  I walked by the food court in Langham Place and almost EVERYONE was eating this, and it made the whole food court smell so so good.  I think there are 4 locations in Hong Kong.

Basically you have raw meat and corn in the middle of a hot sizzling plate with rice around it.  While it's still sizzling hot, you add sauces like garlic or soy sauce and then mix it around with two metal spoons to cook the meat and mix the rice in.  The beef was a little too peppery for me but adding more garlic sauce helped :P  It's pretty fun to eat but quite pricy, the cheapest is the black pepper beef rice for $38, and goes up to over $70 HKD for rice with actual steak.

Food Roundup (Week 5)

Sorry I'm half a week late with this, just been having too much fun ;)  It's come to my attention that I've been blogging so much about food and not about my other experiences here...but obviously food is the best part :D  Ok... more interesting posts coming soon :)

More food this week because a bunch of us (actually, 42 of us!) went to celebrate a friend's birthday at a Chiu Chow restaurant.  We had a 10 course meal (pics starting from first pic of 2nd row) for ~$1100 HK, which came out to about $110 per person - that's less than $20!! More details in #1:

1.  10 Course Set Dinner @ Tak Kee Chiu Chou Restaurant (Kennedy Town, Western District)

Most of the food was pretty "typical Chinese", but the one thing I've never seen before is this fried noodle pancake shown above.  It's sliced like a pizza, and you add vinegar (I think) and sugar on it.  It tastes pretty good, especially with the sugar contrasting with the vinegar.  Interesting :P  Good meal overall, we were all extremely satisfied at the end!

2.  Nestle Mango Sago Popsicle

Had to buy this once I saw it!!  Mango sago is an extremely popular dessert in Hong Kong, and it's basically chilled mango juice with cubes of mango and pomelo.  Awesome dessert in the form of a POPSICLE?? I think it was only $4HKD ($0.55 CAD)... By the way, the drink on the right is a white grape aloe drink, it tastes almost exactly like the aloe drinks at home but Minute Maid branded...haha.

A side note, I've been eating breakfast more often at the canteen and it's so good!  There's so much choice and it's pretty cheap (usually under <$25HKD = $3.50CAD).  They have the usual eggs, toast, sausage, ham (all HK style of course), you can also get fried fish fillet (my favourite), turnip cake, chicken burger patty (don't ask), macaroni and ham in soup (very HK style), daily congee and fried noodles.  Usually 3 of these items comes for under $25.. so cheap!!  First few pics in the "food roundup" picture are breakfast meals.

Having a pretty epic food week this week so stay tuned :)

Food Roundup (Week 4)

(Click for larger pic!)

This week's notables:

1.  Shake Shake Fanta

Fanta is a brand of pop that apparently originated from Germany.  You can get it at Mcdonalds (kinda similar to C-plus) or at convenience stores.  Saw a pack of Shake Shake Fanta at the local food mart and decided to give it a try.  Basically you refrigerate it, and then when it's cool you shake it 10 times really hard (thats what it says on the can) and the drink turns into a jelly soda dessert/drink.  It tasted really good when I first opened it, but it seemed like it got more and more "jelly" as I left it out.  I liked the taste of soda with jelly bits but after a while I was just struggling to slurp the jelly out of the can :P  You can find single cans in the convenience store (7-11) or in a pack of 6.

Will hopefully eat some more interesting food this week :)  Also, check out my post on Pizza Hut in my birthday post here. :P

Food Roundup (Week 3)

(Click for larger pic!)

This week's notables:

1.  Tofu Ice Cream on Red Bean Ice @ Tsui Wah (翠華餐廳)

I went to this restaurant on Saturday night and someone wanted to order the tofu ice cream on red bean ice but it was sold out and I really wanted to try it, since it was tofu ice cream after all. Funny enough, me and my roommate were trying to find a restaurant in central and we ended up at another branch of this restaurant! I'm a pretty huge fan of red bean ice (a cold drink with red bean, sugary syrup and milk) so definitely had to try this one.  The tofu ice cream tasted like tofu, what can I say... and the tofu ice cream didn't make that much of a difference in the drink anyway, but it was cool to try something new =)

2.  Passionfruit shaved ice @ Modern Toilet Restaurant (Mong Kok or Causeway Bay)

Yes there is a toilet restaurant in Hong Kong!  All the food is served in mini toilets or other washroom related items, and some of the drinks are served in mini urinals.  A bunch of us decided to only get dessert because we wanted to check out the all you can eat KBBQ downstairs (which included all you can eat salmon sashimi, AHHH!).  We definitely didn't expect this to be SO huge!  The shaved ice was topped with various toppings like jelly, little cookies, raisins and fruit and chocolate ice cream shaped like poop :P  Pretty delicious, and flavourful all the way through unlike in Canada where half of it is just ice and no flavour!

Some other photos @ Modern Toilet:

My food is getting less and less interesting because I eat at the canteen (cafeteria) most of the time :P

Food Roundup (Week 2)

This week's notables:

1.  Rice Noodle Roll (Cheung Fun 腸粉)

This snack (pictured left) is cheap (around $10hkd a plate) and tastes sooo good!  It's basically a bunch of rice noodle rolls cut into bite sized pieces, served with peanut sauce, sweet sauce and hot sauce which you squirt on however you want.  I personally like covering the cheung fun with peanut sauce and then squirting some sweet sauce on the side. SO GOOD!

2.  Taiwanese Snowflake Ice @ 糖仁街 China Town Dessert (TST)

Rough translation of the Chinese name for this dessert - 雪花冰.  First time I've ever tried or SEEN this and my goodness, it was sooo good.  I should have taken a picture of the order form - you choose one flavour for the ice cream base (10+ options), then a sauce/topping, then two sides.   I can't remember exactly what we ordered but I think the first one was green tea ice cream with sesame with tapioca balls and exploding mango balls.  These are like jelly/tapioca with mango juice inside, so they explode in your mouth when you eat them (SO GOOD!!!) .  Second one was chocolate ice cream with cornflakes and exploding yogurt balls and glutinous rice balls (湯圓?).  Best. Dessert. Ever.

Notable mention:  Mcdonalds Sausage and Egg Mcmuffin (Combo #10)

This is available ALL DAY every day for $9HKD (roughly $1.25 CAD).  That is all.

Food Roundup (Week 1)

I'll try to do a summary/review of the food I eat each week. It might get boring after school starts :P

This week's notables:

1.  Hot Pot @ Cafe de Coral (大家樂)

Cafe de Coral is kind of a "fancy" fast food place.  It's very clean and has lots of choices (Chinese food).  It's also SUPER efficient.  You order near the entrance, and then walk to the back to a semi-open kitchen to give them your receipt, and a human conveyor belt puts your meal together in no time.  I was surprised to find out that they serve hot pot there.  They give you a bento box full of raw food and a mini pot and stove.  There were tons of people taking their time eating hot pot by themselves.

2.  Red Bean & Almond Paste Waffles @ UCC Coffee Shop (Harbour City, TST)

Initially didn't want to eat waffles since I can get them in Canada, but found a special "flavour" different from the regular ones.  The waffles, dusted with icing sugar, was served with red bean spread, a scoop of green tea ice cream topped with almond paste.  Looking back I think I was supposed to get 4 pieces of waffles instead of two (jipped =P) but I was more than happy with 2.  Way too filling!

3.  Ebi Burger @ Mcdonalds

The limited-time shrimp burger currently at Mcdonalds.  Mcdonalds here always has crazy featured burgers so you'll be sure to know when a new one comes out ;P

4.  Fried Mochi @ Sweetheart Dessert (Sai Kung)

You know the frozen ice cream mochi you can find at T&T?  Lotte Yukimi Daifuku... I LOVE these, I finish a box within an hour if I'm not stopped (First pic on left). This week I tried fried mochi which tasted pretty much like this snack/dessert with a fried outer layer.  AHHH!!  Warm fried shell, chewy "skin", cold ice cream.  I will be dreaming about this dessert for years to come...
